Zacchaeus visits Messy Church
It was encouraging to be part of Messy Church at the Amberley Anglican parish in July, when children and adults gathered to celebrate the Bible story of Zacchaeus—through stories, multimedia, songs, prayers, art, and improvised drama. Encouraging because of the fun, the enthusiasm of children, the quality time for families, and the power of Messy Church to bring different generations and parts of the wider community together Continue reading
Living Wage visit to Hurunui POSTPONED
Sorry for the late notice, but please note that the Living Wage hearing at the HDC has been postponed for now.
Living Wage visits Hurunui
Can you spare an hour of your time to support Anglican Advocacy and the Living Wage movement as they try to make a difference to people in our very own Hurunui district?
Living Wage Canterbury is taking deputation to the Hurunui District Council at 1pm on the 27th August, 66 Carters Road, Amberley. As ratepayers of the district, we are able to attend this meeting and it would be wonderful to see the chambers packed for a change.
Did you know that of the 285,000 children that live in poverty in New Zealand, 40% of them live in families where at least one parent is working full-time or self-employed? Continue reading
Don’t stop giving – the need is still great!
It was heartening to read in The Press newspaper earlier this month that the Christchurch City Mission has received a rapid and generous response to its annual ‘Brown Paper Bag Appeal’. The groceries donated will help to keep the Mission’s food bank well-stocked through the most high-demand winter period.
But in our worship service this morning at St Paul’s, Gray Crawford, Manager of Social Services at the Christchurch City Mission, highlighted the biggest problem affecting the most poor and marginalised people of Christchurch: Continue reading

Conspicuous chocolate consumption ahead
Hot off the press (well, warmish) is our parish quarterly newsletter (WHAM). In this issue is a brief reflection by Lynnette Lightfoot on what Easter means for us today when the most obvious thing about it is the conspicuous consumption of chocolate… Continue reading
Messy Church is back!
From the Messy Church noticeboard February 2015
Messy Church is a fresh expression of what church is and can be. It’s open to the whole community, not only regular church-goers and Anglicans, and it’s not on a Sunday morning. PLEASE NOTE: it’s also not a requirement to be accompanied by children. So, adults and children, come and join us in Amberley — and bring a friend or neighbour.
The next Messy Church event will be on Sunday 22nd February, from 4.15pm, in the hall next to Holy Innocents Church in Amberley. Continue reading
Home rituals in Advent
What home rituals do you have in Advent? My family is packing to move house a week before Christmas, so Advent is rather invisible at home at the moment. In the past, we have had an Advent candle or an Advent calendar, and rituals such as writing cards and putting up the tree and decorations a week before Christmas. What do you do in this month to get ready for the One whose coming we await?
Below I have re-posted a lovely personal blogpost by another on this subject. It would be interesting to hear in the comments what YOU do in Advent to mark the season.

St Chrysostom's Church News and Views
Recovering at home from a recent operation Sandra reflects on home rituals of Advent, and a Posada visit:
Several angels have been ministering in this house recently, bringing me cups of tea, hoovering , making me dinner and doing those tasks which the use of double crutches make impossible or at least difficult. But since Sunday an image of an angel has also appeared daily, so far one hovering over the bread bin , one in a window and two in the hall. And behold sitting on the sideboard between some cards is a wiseman on his camel. Sometime in the next two weeks he will meet the other two wisemen also in the house perched in unlikely places.
Slowly, day by day, my house is moving towards the climax of Christmas Eve . In the last week the tree will be decorated, the house will be filled with assorted…
